This interesting photo is thought to capture a gathering of Aspin's which took place around 1954. My grandmother Rebecca is on the back row against the wall (2nd from the left in the large hat), whilst my grandfather Norman is in front of her (immediately below the lady on Rebecca's right). The only other known persons are Norman's brother Irvine (on his left), and Irvine's wife Ettie (next but one on Rebecca's left). It is reported that the man with the glasses and cigarette in front of Norman and Irvine (and directly under the ladies sign) is their uncle. This would make him a brother of their father Antipas Aspin, and one of the sons of Christopher George Aspin. This claim, however, may not be true. The reported date of circa 1954 can be fairly well established as my Auntie Dorothy recalls she was not invited to attend (no longer having the surname Aspin following her marriage), but could not have done so in any case as her daughter Hazel had recently been born. It is known that a number of Christopher George Aspin's sons had already died before this date, including Samuel, William, John, and Alfred. Date of death of another brother, David, have not yet been established, but had he survived until the time of this photo then he would have been 81 yrs. The gentleman in question does not appear to have reached such a venerable age - in fact he appears little older than Norman and Irvine, and is therefore more likely to be a cousin. If anyone can provide details of other individuals please get in touch! |
